Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this called Uma Mayo?

The name Uma Mayo is short for Umami Mayo, reflecting the rich umami flavour that seaweed brings. Umami is a Japanese word meaning savouriness, created by glutamate that occurs naturally in foods such as seaweed.

What seaweed is used in the Uma Mayo?

We use organic seaweed powder (sea lettuce) in Uma Mayo. Sea lettuce is dried and powdered before mixing it into the mayo.

What does Uma Mayo taste like?

Our customers often describe Uma Mayo as “sushi in a sauce.” Because seaweed is not fully dissolvable, you may notice a slightly grainy texture when tasting it on its own. However, it’s usually mixed with other foods, where the texture becomes barely noticeable and the umami flavour really shines.

What foods does Uma Mayo pair well with?

Uma Mayo pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, including:

  • Sushi
  • Poke bowls
  • Fresh cucumber
  • Potatoes (fried, baked, or roasted)
Is Uma Mayo eggless?

Yes, Umei Uma Mayo emulsifies using plant-based protein instead of eggs or egg yolk. It creates a light texture compared to traditional mayo.

How long does Umei Uma Mayo last?

We recommend you store Umei Mayo in the fridge after opening and consume it within 4-6 weeks.
